Winners?
Between urban dance and theater, WINNERS explores the personal and competitive stories of Detours battle champions. Choreographer and breakdancer Milan Emmanuel brings to light the stories of these exceptional dancers, revealing their inner motivations and the flaws hidden behind their determination. The show offers a kaleidoscopic narrative, interweaving life stories and competitive mechanisms, from victory to failure, while preserving the powerful energy of the battle universe.
For over 10 years, I've been active on the battles break scene. Devoting myself body and soul to it, I put enormous pressure on myself and couldn't bear to fail. This was my gateway to choreographic creation. In line with my previous creations, in this show I present dancers who are out of the ordinary. I probe the intentions of true champions, dancers with a “Battle” spirit, the eye of the tiger, for whom defeat is not an option. I'm interested in uncovering the processes that drive these champions.
What are their personal stories? What is their inner drive? Does this determination hide any flaws? I f so, what are they? Does personal success have to come at the expense of others?
Between urban dance and theater, the life stories interweave in a kaleidoscopic narrative, linking the dreams of one to the difficulties of others.
Through victory, we also explore the notion of failure. After all, sooner or later, we are all confronted with failure, to varying degrees. Why do some give in to it and give up, while others use it as a resilience factor to move forward? This show challenges our competitive mechanisms.
I'm careful to preserve the powerful energetic charge of the battle universe while retranscribing the more sensitive strata of the dancers' psyches.
To present these champions in their different facets, sometimes unsinkable, sometimes fragile.
